Your Retrenchment Exit Checklist

Print this. Take it to your HR meeting. Don't leave your employer's office without every item ticked.

A — Documents to collect from your employer

  • Certificate of Service
  • UI-19 form (completed by employer — verify the termination code: Code 11 for retrenched, Code 16 for VSP)
  • Final Payslip (showing all deductions and payments)
  • Pension / Provident Fund Withdrawal or Transfer Forms
  • VSP Agreement (if applicable)
  • SARS Tax Directive (request a copy from your employer / fund)
  • Letter of Retrenchment (on company letterhead)
  • Confirmation of medical aid termination date
  • Group life and disability cover details (conversion option contact)

B — Actions to take immediately

  • Register at your nearest Labour Centre for UIF (within 6 months)
  • Get financial advice BEFORE accepting any package or cashing out your fund
  • Check your medical aid status and conversion window (typically 30 days)
  • Check your group life conversion option (typically 60 days)
  • Update beneficiary nominations on all replacement policies
  • Contact your home loan / car finance / credit card providers about retrenchment cover
  • Review your Will and estate plan

C — Contact your financial adviser
